The FDA are finding ways to approve new drugs much quicker. They do so when they n-
ame the chemical agents breakthrough treatments. The Food & Drug Administration sta-
nd so firm and still use their regulatory powers correctly. The ASCO cancer discussion w-
as another gathering that some of the FDA representatives attended.
Those human beings elaborated on the breakthrough designation and got their points ac-
ross clearly. Will the Food & Drug Administration really have the resources to speed up
the approvals and analyze standards simultaneously on a consistent basis? I am confid-
ent that they will be able to handle the tasks.
The Food and Drug Administration Safety and Innovation Act do include the breakthrough
designation. The main intentions of the breakthrough therapies are to be the top priorities
over the analysis of standards. Those therapies are also above orphan drugs. The FDA kn-
ow that they have to collaborate with the sponsors of drugs regarding the creation and follo-
w-up of the clinical plans. The mechanics are in the hands of the Food and Drug Administr-
ation.
Commissioner Margaret Hamburg & her colleague Richard Pazdur spoke eloquently at the
gathering. Richard is the Director of the Office of Oncology Drug Products. They made their
thoughts known to oncologists there. Pazdur said that he interpreted the law as meaning th-
at the drugs must have shown signs of efficacy in order to qualify.
Pazdur said: "The data must indicate that the drugs are transformative therapies that are re-
ally going to offer patients an option, which no other therapy existed. Or, they are dramatic i-
mprovements that looks like they are going to transform patients' lives. I mean both the qual-
ity and quantity of their lives."
Richard also said: "Unlike orphan designations, more than one drug in a class targeting a sp-
ecific disease can earn the breakthrough moniker, which allows for the possibility of clinical f-
ailure."
Kalydeco and VX-809 are from the company Vertex Pharmaceuticals. The mixture of those 2
drugs made a tough compound and that is the first breakthrough that the FDA approved. More
compounds were approved after that one. A lot of them are oncology and haematology treatm-
ents.
The breakthrough therapies will truly go to war for the ladies and dudes that are having issues
regarding cancerous cells. Respect all that are on the frontlines & the other lines in the battles.
Plenty more victories will happen because of the persistence and strength.
